Planning & Acoustic Design
Practical acoustic advice for new developments, conversions and changes of use — from early design through to addressing planning conditions.
Practical acoustic advice for new developments, conversions and changes of use — from early design through to addressing planning conditions.
We work with developers, architects and planning consultants to identify noise constraints and incorporate suitable acoustic measures into the design. Our services include noise surveys, predictive modelling, and advice on building layouts, sound insulation, glazing, ventilation and noise barriers.
Each assessment is tailored to the site and relevant planning requirements, with clear recommendations that balance acoustic performance, practicality and cost. We provide reports to support planning applications and the discharge of noise-related conditions.
Continuous day, night, or weekend monitoring using Class 1 sound level meters to accurately capture the existing acoustic environment.
Detailed analysis against relevant standards and guidance, including BS 8233, BS 4142 and ProPG and computer noise modelling where required.
A professional technical report suitable for supporting planning applications and the discharge of noise-related conditions, detailing the assessment findings and recommended acoustic design and mitigation measures.
We review your planning application or pre-application advice to confirm local authority requirements and define a clear, fixed-fee scope.
Our acoustic consultants attend the site to deploy calibrated Class 1 monitoring equipment and gather reliable background noise data.
We process the noise data, evaluate potential impacts, and specify efficient, cost-effective mitigation options if needed.
You receive a comprehensive, planning-ready acoustic report — and we can provide follow-up support through the planning/condition-discharge process.
Send us the project details and deadline. We’ll come back with a clear, fixed scope and timeline.
Ideally before submitting your planning application. Identifying noise risks early allows acoustic constraints to be integrated into the design, preventing costly delays or objections. However, we also regularly help clients address noise-related planning conditions post-permission.
We assess developments using key UK standards and guidelines, including BS 8233 (internal noise in buildings), BS 4142 (industrial/commercial sound), ProPG: Planning & Noise, BS 5228 (construction noise), and local authority specific policies.
Most standard assessments take between 2 to 3 weeks from site survey to final report delivery. If your planning deadline is urgent, let us know and we can arrange fast-track monitoring and reporting.
High existing environmental noise levels do not automatically prevent development. We design tailored, practical mitigation strategies — such as acoustic glazing, acoustic trickle vents, or sound barriers — to ensure external and internal noise criteria are met.
